End of Summer Term Update – Primary and Secondary

Thank you to all the schools that have been working with us this year! Despite the difficult circumstances, we are really pleased with how schools have engaged with the various Maths Hub Work Groups, especially with the shift to online platforms.

Responding to the COVID19 Pandemic

All of our work next year will be ‘tilted’ to adjust for the COVID19 pandemic and the possible issues that schools will be facing. This means that many Work Groups will begin later than usual next academic year and we will make use of online webinar platforms where necessary. This work will also be supported by the wider, national work of the NCETM, including the release of a ‘Ready to Progress’ criteria that sits alongside the National Curriculum for primary schools. This document has a basis in the work of John Hattie and outlines the key aspects of mathematics learning that pupils need from each year group. Essentially, it guides schools to focus on the most important bits of maths in each year group. This will be released before the end of the Summer term and will be used within our primary Work Groups next year.

Involvement in all of our Work Groups is free of charge as it is funded by the DfE. We would love to have you join our mathematical community. Please have a look at what we will be offering in the list below and get in contact if you have any further questions about a programme. We will soon be able to share specific flyers about each programme.

Primary Opportunities

Building Firm Mathematical Foundations in EYFS

This Work Group is aimed at schools who are already using a Teaching for Mastery approach in years 1-6 and want to develop the mathematics provision in EYFS so it is aligned with this.

Teaching for Mastery Readiness Programme

This programme is aimed at schools who feel like they need some initial support before moving fully onto the main Mastery Development programme (below). Schools in this programme receive significant bespoke support from the Maths Hub.

Teaching for Mastery Development Programme

This programme is aimed at schools wishing to develop a teaching for mastery approach across the school.

Teaching for Mastery Embedding Programme

This is for schools who have been on the Development programme this academic year (2019/20). Schools will automatically move onto this phase.

Teaching for Mastery Sustaining Programme

This is for schools who have been on the Development programme in previous academic years (between 2016 and 2018). The aim is to continue to develop mastery in your school and help take teachers’ understanding deeper.

Subject Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics for primary teachers

This programme is aimed at individual teachers wishing to deepen their knowledge of the mathematical concepts that are central to helping pupils develop deep understanding.

Subject Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics for primary teaching assistants

This programme is aimed at individual teaching assistants wishing to deepen their knowledge of the mathematical concepts that are central to helping pupils develop deep understanding.

Transition from primary to secondary

This programme is aimed at teachers in years 5 to 8 and looks at some of the key issues surrounding transition into secondary school. Ideally, this Work Group consists of a single secondary school and a group of partner primaries.

Secondary and Post-16 Opportunities

Secondary Teaching for Mastery Development Programme

This Work Group is for schools wishing to develop teaching for mastery further across the department. It involves two teachers becoming ‘Mastery Advocates’ within their school. For further information please see the NCETM website.

Secondary Teaching for Mastery Embedding Programme

This is for schools who have been on the Development programme this academic year (2019/20). Schools will automatically move onto this phase.

Mathematical Thinking Programme

This Work Group focuses on practical classroom strategies that help develop pupils mathematical thinking.

Challenging Topics at GCSE

This Work Group focuses on particular topics that pupils tend to struggle with at GCSE.

Post-16 GCSE Re-sit

This Work Group focuses on how best to support pupils re-taking the mathematics GCSE.

Developing A-Level Pedagogy

This Work Group focuses on how to develop A-Level pedagogy with an emphasis on use of technology (no knowledge of technology required!)
