Contract: Secondment (0.5–1 day per week, term time only)
Duration: Fixed term until 31 August 2027 (or duration of grant funding)
Start Date: 1 September 2026
Funding: 20–40 days per academic year (2026/27), plus up to 5 additional funded training days in Summer Term 2026

About the Role
The Cheshire and Wirral Maths Hub is seeking an experienced and highly effective Early Years practitioner to join our Maths Hub Leadership and Management Team as Assistant Maths Hub Lead (Reception).This is a unique opportunity to support and shape high-quality early mathematics provision across Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, Wirral and Halton. The hub is the go-to provider for mathematics professional development in the region and is part of the national Maths Hubs network across England. The role plays a key part in delivering the national Best Start in Life (BSiL) offer and improving early maths
outcomes for children.

Key Responsibilities
The Assistant Maths Hub Lead (Reception) will:
● Oversee all Reception-related activity within the Maths Hub
● Facilitate and support implementation of Mastering Number, including live lesson observation opportunities
● Oversee Reception Targeted Support in Mathematics (TSM) and Subject Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM)
● Support delivery of BSiL programmes in collaboration with the Maths Hub Leadership Team
● Develop Local Leaders of Mathematics Education (LLMEs), including facilitating an online community and identifying future leaders
● Provide support to Intensive Support Partners where appropriate
● Develop relationships with key partners, including Early Years Stronger Practice Hubs and other system stakeholders
● Work closely with the NCETM to ensure effective communication and delivery
● Contribute to recruitment strategies for Reception-focused programmes
● Attend and contribute to MHLM team meetings and AMHL Reception forums
● Report to the Maths Hub Lead and Senior Leadership Link
● Evaluate and communicate the impact of the Hub’s Reception work

Candidate Requirements
Essential:
● Current or very recent (within 2–3 years) experience teaching Reception
● Strong subject and pedagogical knowledge in early mathematics
● Experience of leading improvement in early maths within your own school and
● Familiarity with Mastering Number (as a class teacher or Work Group Lead)
● Accreditation as a Professional Development Lead or School Development Lead, or willingness to gain accreditation
● Full support and release agreement from your Headteacher

Desirable:
● Primary Mastery Specialist accreditation
● PD Lead (Early Years) accreditation
● Experience leading professional development in Early Years
● Experience of supporting change beyond your classroom

Time Commitment & School Expectations
● Funded release of 20–40 days per year (equivalent to 0.5–1 day per week), agreed in discussion with the successful candidate and their school
● Up to 5 additional funded development days in Summer Term 2026
● Headteachers are expected to:
o Ensure agreed release time is provided
o Support the continued development and embedding of high-quality mathematics practice within school

There may also be opportunities to engage in additional Maths Hub accredited leadership programmes (e.g. Professional Development Lead or School Development Lead).
