Clean Set up at NW6
Clean Language
At NW6 we are developing the use of Clean Language to support our Vision which is to ’nurture inclusion, by building agency so that everyone flourishes in a society fluent in mathematics.’
We are using the three Clean Language questions as they help set the tone for meetings, forums and professional conversations. This Clean set-up activates personal agency – it takes our focus from what we would like others to do, to what we would like our own state to be. This creates space for reflection, ensures every voice is heard, and helps people enter discussions feeling positive, valued and ready to contribute.
Background
The Clean Set up was created by Dr Caitlin Walker. She describes it in her book, “From Contempt to Curiosity’. This is her website if you’d like to read more and this is a blog from the website on one experience of the set up.
At NW6 we have also worked closely as a team to develop our Clean Set-up.
NW6 – Our Three Clean Set-up Questions
We begin meetings by asking three Clean Set-up questions:
For this to go just the way you’d like, It would be like what…
For this to go just the way you’d like, You would be like what…
For this to go just the way you’d like, What support or resources would you like…
Summary
The Clean Set-up is about helping people enter conversations feeling positive, supported and ready to contribute. When people feel good, they think better, collaborate better and make better decisions together. Ultimately, we want people to have agency and using this framework helps them to do this.
